Best explanation I found yet. Finally I found the reason of my shoulder pain.
finalresistance on May 1, 2010 at 12:56 pm
Does the reason for “getting friendly” with the pad have to do with the fact that the pad is almost right below the pulley and you want to get as close to the pulley as possible and still be stabilized? Are there any ill constructed machines which have the pulley way our in front of the pad?

very nice work mate. I’m did some today, but I did them wrong. I’m going to go back tomorrow, hit that lat pulldown machine, use your tips, and blast my latissimus dorsi!
Thanks again. Awesome video.

Thanks, so much!!!!!! I’ve struggled with this exercise forever. I ever had a personal trainer at one point that never corrected my horrible form, and in fact always said “Put some bicpep into it!”. Keeping my elbows down has relieved the stress off my biceps and put it into my lats.

@finalresistance Alignment is important, but you also want to be firmly locked into the machine, especially as you start getting higher weights, closer to body weight. If you’re not firmly locked in, you’ll become unstable as the pull down becomes a pull up and you start to lift yourself off the seat.
samurphy on July 11, 2010 at 8:56 am
@filosofodemierda absolutely. This exercise is perfect for working up to pull ups. You can try assisted pull ups, too. Where you rest one foot on a chair in front of you while doing pullups. You can then use that leg slightly to help you during the up part of the pull up, and slowly lower yourself down unassisted. Doing the negative part of a pull up, or any exercise, is a great way to train for doing the whole thing.
samurphy on July 11, 2010 at 8:57 am
@Markohoppis Yep, they will. They’re perfect for when you cant do pull ups, and want to train for them.

hi, one thing im a bit confused on is the elbow position you say you should rotate it outwards then you rotate your elbows forward which position is it? hopefully soomone wil reply i kno its an old vid =/
TimD106 on July 24, 2010 at 11:06 am
@alibabazs What he meant is just keep your elbow outward when you grab the weight and when you pull it be sure your elbows face the floor. If they arent facing the floor then you’re finishing the motion with a tricep pushdown.
alibabazs on August 2, 2010 at 12:47 pm
@TimD106 i noticed it doesnt make a difference whether i rotate my elbows inward or outward when pulling the cable as long as im pulling the cable towards my upper chest my elbows point towards the floor more or less but i noticed i can handle more reps/weight with my elbows inward
