I had this thought the other day.
Girls bodies start to grow and become fuller just at the same time as they begin to read fashion magazines where the "ideal" body shape is that of a pre-pubescent girl (or even boy). The girls see the shape they used to be in the models in the magazines, think that it is what they as adults should look like, then conclude that they have put on a lot of weight recently!
Any thoughts or other ideas?
