A healthy weight loss diet plan should be first and foremost on our radar screen. We also understand that the modern world demands a successful career and a fast paced tech savvy social life. These demands also place such an unbalanced burden on people in the area of physical appearance.

The career, social and physical aspect can be so crushing that proper health practices suffer as a result. Not everyone can keep up with the blistering pace set by those at the very top. It can be quite brutal; more fall off the wagon than not. After a winter of hibernation, many are looking to shed those extra pounds. Some do, and some do not.

You should check your diet and rid it of the following:

1. chips and dips

2. soda and sweet juices

3. fast foods

4. these are deadly combos to your health.

These daily combos will set you up for long term health challenges. Your body tends to store these items as fat, especially if you are sedentary. The scales tip, and before long you are battling an obesity problem.

In any healthy weight loss diet plan exercise should be an extremely important segment. The balance of a sound diet and regular exercise safeguards your body for the future. Simple things like:

1. walking after meals

2. half hour exercise per day

3. gym workout for an hour

4. adopting a five day a week exercise program.

Just these simple exercise tips incorporated into your lifestyle will serve you well and go a long way to staving off obesity.

It is easy to talk about what you should not eat, but let us consider some of the foods we should keep around our homes. When starting a healthy weight loss diet plan it is important to keep healthy food items in our storage cabinets. When the good foods are not readily available we tend to snack on fast foods and unhealthy quick foods.

Keep these items in storage at home at all times:

1. Water! Keep your favorite water on hand at all times. Remember, do not just have it readily available, drink it! It is always best to drink water at room temperature. Cold water tends to slow and impede the digestive process.

2. Soy Milk. Good for cereals. If you cannot handle this, try the powder form. That works better for me. I mix a pitcher of the powder and it goes great with my cereals and oatmeal. Stay away from cows milk. It is for calves.

3. Have fruit handy. I am a banana person. They fill you quicker than a bag of chips will.

4. Carrots and Broccoli. Get a vegetarian recipe for dip.

5. How about peanut butter. Spread that on your toast instead of butter.

6. Do you like eggs? Have you ever heard of Egg Beaters? They are an excellent alternative to eggs.

7. Bread. I am talking about the wholesome wheat bread. Never allow white bread to cross your lips.

8. Cheese. Make your own vegetarian cheese; it is great, tastes better too!

9. Brown rice. Great for a quick meal. Never white rice.

10. I did mention cereals earlier. Read the labels, watch for the sugar content.

There is a big problem with obesity especially in the United States. This is great for those companies in the weight loss business. In fact, it is extremely great because they know that you probably won’t make it on your diet but you will have spent some money with them trying. Why is it that most people can’t lose weight? It has to do with behavior change. They don’t lose weight because they don’t change their behavior towards food intake and exercise. Not only is burning excess calories essential to weight loss but reducing food intake as well. Part of losing weight is being able to push yourself away from the table but many cannot do this. They typically don’t eat to be filled but stuff themselves. Depending on your situation, sometimes it is even okay to miss a meal.

It is interesting to note that Buddhist monks are committed to eating only two meals a day with the heaviest meal being at 11:00 A.M. each day. Why is this? Because the Buddha said that eating from noon until dawn the next day was unhealthy and would make the body too full for meditation. There is a lot of truth to this because when one eats a meal too late in the evening they will gain weight plus have a tough time sleeping. Yet we do this with our hurried lifestyles and late in the evening eating habits. The country of Brazil is recognizing a growing obesity problem within its ranks yet it is common for people there to eat very late in the evening around 9:00 P.M. or even 10:00 P.M.

Another reason why most people can’t lose weight is due to our attitudes about wanting something and wanting it now. When we set out to lose weight, we place unreasonably high standards on ourselves and set goals we know good and well cannot be achieved. Then, when we don’t lose 30 pounds in a month for example, we just give up our diet or our weight loss program because we can’t see the use. Your weight problem did not happen to you overnight. It took awhile for you to get into this condition and it will take a reasonable steady process to reverse it. Your body can safely lose one to two pounds per week so you do the math. You may not see noticeable results for months.

It is important to set goals that can be realistically reached. And you should have a forgiving spirit towards yourself. When you set out to change behavior you are going to without a doubt fail a few times. You have to be able to pick yourself back up and try again. People who attempt to quit smoking go through this cycle. They will start out well and then have a bad day and smoke. The ones who successfully quit smoking are the ones who start the quitting process right away after their fall.

And finally, a reason why most people can’t lose weight has to do with their attitude toward food and its use. Your body needs food to live. That’s it. While it can be an enjoyable experience, that experience should not be the goal when eating. In other words, we should not use food to lift us up when our mood is down nor use it as a reward when we have achieved something. Food should only be looked at as a substance necessary to sustain life. By changing our attitude in this way we are doing well towards our ultimate goal of losing weight.

Americans spend millions of dollars per year on diet programs, weight loss pills and gym memberships, and yet the obesity rate in America dramatically increases from year to year. There are many different reasons why the obesity problem in America continues to get worse and worse, however to put it rather harshly the two main reasonas are laziness and convenience.

It is much harder to follow a diet and see results if you don’t exercise, but people have become so busy with work and driving kids to soccer practice that they leave no time to workout or participate in any kind of daily exercise. People have also become so dependent on their cars that they will drive to work even if they are close enough to walk or ride a bike. This lack of effort to establish some kind of daily exercise routine is one of the leading causes of failed diets and weight loss attempts. Diet and exercise should go hand in hand together. Without one, you are sure to fail.

Americans have become dependent on the diet pill to fix all of their weight loss problems. They feel like as long as they are popping these pills twice a day, it justifies them eating a double whopper for lunch. Weight loss is never easy and thinking it can occur with a quick fix like a diet pill is a sure sign that your diet will fail. There are no “miracle” diet pills. If there were don’t you think that we all would know about it by now? If diet pills really worked Americans would not be the heaviest they’ve ever been.

Diets that severely restrict your caloric intake are also likely to fail. This is because your body needs at the very minimum 1,000 calories per day to survive; even this number is pushing it. When you severely decrease your caloric intake your body begins to shut down in order to preserve energy. This actually makes it harder to burn calories and lose weight. You will also have little energy to perform normal daily tasks. Most people who attempt this type of diet can only maintain it for a few days and then end up binging in order to make up for the lost calories.

Diets that have regimented meal plans are also difficult to follow. These plans mean that the dieter must either buy expensive diet shakes or meals and stock up their fridge with very specific foods. It also cuts out the idea that they will ever be able to eat out. Instead, the dieter will need to eat at home what is planned out for them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Our busy, on-the-go lifestyle makes it very hard to follow this kind of diet plan. It is also difficult to follow because you usually end up craving something that is not a part of this regimented plan.

Convenience and fast food restaurants are the killers of any diet. This weakness normally begins with the kids begging you to stop on the way home from school for a happy meal. You give in and while you’re waiting to order, you look over the menu and decide to order an extra value meal for yourself as well. It’s convenient, on the way home, and it means you don’t have to spend any time in the kitchen. It seems like the perfect solution to a busy day, except for the extra 1,500 calories it packs on. That’s 500 calories more than the minimum amout of calories that you should be consuming for the entire day.

The good news is that you do not need to diet in order to lose weight. Simply forego fast food restaurants, cook at home instead. The second step is to eat what you want, but to use portion control. Instead of cooking a big pot of pasta, cook a small one instead. If you don’t have a big plateful of food in front of you, it will prevent you from eating too much. Try to incorporate a balanced diet into your daily routine. Having a bowl of ice cream once a week will not kill your diet. It is a good idea though to keep the scoop of ice cream minimal, add a bunch of strawberries, blueberries, or other favorite fruit on top, and hold off on the hot fudge.
