Weight loss supplements are advertised as the cure to obesity. But do these pills work? And how safe are they?

We often see advertisements for supplements promising instant weight loss in short periods of time. For people who have suffered long periods with weight issue problems, have had it impact their lives negatively and have had little or no success with diet programs, a miracle solution is what they are looking for. But some things are too good to be true and supplements may just fall in this category.

Supplements are available to anyone, since they can be obtained without a doctor’s prescription. Their manufacturers profess remarkable results and even tout them as being “natural”. It has become a billion dollar business and many people will use their hard earned money on these products and pills. The problem is, more often than not, these claims are fraudulent. Natural does not necessarily mean safe. In addition the body can quickly adjust to many of these weight loss pills, allowing any of the positive results obtained to vanish. Short-term usage of supplements along with a proper diet and exercise program will produce a more desired outcome.

If you’re thinking what could I lose by trying these? A few pounds would be great! Well think again, you could be losing your health. The FDA does not approve weight loss supplements and there are no government agencies that require warnings on their labels about possible side effects. This is due to the DSHEA Act (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act) that permits any dietary supplement derived from a plant origin to be sold without FDA or any other government agency approval. Natural seems harmless enough. A plant in its natural state is harmless. The problem comes when it is extracted and put in pill, capsule or concentrated form. At this point they are capable of causing a range of side effects and can interact negatively with many prescription drugs. Now natural becomes risky.

Although the FDA does not regulate these products, they can pull them from sale if it is determined that they are dangerous. At this point, it is too late for many who have been using the product and have been affected by it adversely.

It is easy to be lured into taking weight loss supplements with the miracles they promise, especially if you have reached the point of desperation. If you rank among those whose weight is causing serious health issues, then prescription diet pills under the supervision of a doctor may well be an option. If you don’t fall in this category and are looking for a quick fix, you may be tempted to try these supplements. But keep in mind; supplements may cause you more problems than your weight currently is. You should always be aware of what you are putting in your body. Read the labels, do the research and check with your doctor about what ingredients are contained in them. Find out if they will react adversely with any medication you may be on and what side effects are possible. Remember, losing weight is not easy. It requires a healthy diet and adequate exercise. This is a much safer alternative to the miracle pill.

In todays world, it is commonplace to see everything labeled as natural or herbal. Already on the shelves today are millions of all herbal and all natural products, including dietary supplements and herbal medicine supplements.

When did the sudden influx of these products start? Its possible that the herbal supplement and herbal product trend began when the media began to focus on dietary health and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.

Recognizing the advantages of herbal medicines and natural remedies can also be traced back to our ancestors thousands of years ago. Dating back to 2800 B.C., humans have seen and recorded the benefits of herbal remedies. And now it is your turn!

Herbal medicine and herbal alternatives can be traced a long way through history. Starting within the last 5,000 years all the way up to today, herbal medicine and herbal alternatives are a necessity for those looking for a healthy, natural way to augment their health and treat all sorts of health problems.

Benefits to some of the herbal medicines and herbal alternatives currently on the market include but are not limited to:

Cost-effectiveness

Prescription drugs are more expensive than herbal medicines.

Lower Side Effects

Herbal medicines are not only more convenient, but a far healthier solution than prescription drugs. However, its important to remember that, just because the word natural is included in natural and herbal alternatives, it does not guarantee their safety.

It is crucial to consult your doctor before taking any type of herb, as some herbal medicines and herbal alternatives have proven to be harmful. Its also important to remember that herbal supplements are not drugs and are not classified as such. However, herbal medicines appear to have many advantages over traditional drugs, including a lower occurrence of side effects.

Effectiveness and Potency

Unsatisfactory results with traditional health care often result in a search for alternative treatments. Keep in mind, however, the efficacy of herbal medicines is patient-subjective.

Genetic variations from patient to patient, as well as the ingredients different growing conditions, method and timing of harvest, and exposure to air and light may all affect the potency of a natural herbal medicine or herbal supplement.

Ultimately, herbal medicine and herbal weight loss diets have drawbacks and strong points. Keep in mind that herbal medicines are not a surefire way to heal anything, but are generally a very wallet-friendly, effective health solution.

Finding the right weight loss method for you

For many people, it is difficult to find a weight loss diet that they can stick to. Because of this, they fail to reach their weight goals. They try nearly every kind of diet plan and follow every weight loss tip, but none seem to work! Sound familiar? If so, diet pills and diet supplements may be to way to put you on the right path to successful weight loss.

Herbs have numerous uses today, one of which is as a great weight loss supplement. Aloe Vera, for example, is a diet supplement that improves digestion and cleans the digestive tract, which helps foods to move through the body more quickly, improving health and leading to a higher rate of weight loss.

Or take a look at the herb Cayenne. Cayenne is a diet supplement that reduces the level of hunger one feels after meals, and even raises the metabolism, helping the body to burn calories more effectively. Diet plans are not always successful, but the right herbal supplements can help to increase the effectiveness of any weight loss plan.

Diet pills work in a variety of ways to aid in weight loss. Some decrease the appetite, or increase the metabolism, etc. They are available in both prescription and nonprescription, and generally the prescription diet pills come with a long list of side effects.

As with many synthetic drugs, diet pills can also prove a health risk due to accidental overdose on active ingredients, partly due to the fact that these diet pills contain ingredients similar to common over-the-counter medicines, such as nasal decongestants. Its important to mention any medications you may be taking to your doctor or pharmacist before beginning any diet pill program.

Do diet pills and diet supplements always work? Yes and no. When used under the supervision of a medial specialist, and in addition to a proper exercise and diet, diet pills and diet supplements can be very effective.

With that said, some diet pills/supplements do not work for everybody, and some may even lose effectiveness over time. There is no replacement for hard work and healthy eating, but diet pills and its healthier counterpart herbal diet supplements can provide you with a springboard to weight loss.

In the mid-’90s, the diet pill industry was booming. In 1996, more than 18 million obese people in the United States were taking appetite suppressants like Fenfluramine (or dexfenfluramine) and Phentermine, nicknamed fen-phen. But doctors found that healthy patients who were taking fen-phen developed a potentially fatal heart disease. In September 1997, the FDA announced that it was withdrawing the “fen” drugs from the market because of their link to heart problems. Phentermine diet pill is still available on its own.

Diet pills have become a lucrative business all around the world. Pharmaceutical companies are now pushing to introduce more products to the market. More than 70 weight loss medications are either in development or in clinical trials.

Many prescription drugs are used as diet aids even though that was not their intended purpose. Some anti depressants are used off-label as diet aids because they have been shown in studies to help patients lose weight and keep it off for several months.

Different diet pills work in different ways.

Appetite suppressants such as sibutramine (Meridia), diethyl propion (Tenuate) and phentermine (Adipex) affect the appetite regulating region of the brain called the hypothalamus. They work by changing the levels of the chemical serotonin and nor epinephrine and create the feeling of satiety and thus one feels full and eats less.

It is speculated that this action, along with as yet undetermined effects on the metabolism are responsible for the loss of appetite seen with this class of drugs. Phentermine diet pill can be appropriate for an individual who’s eating habits or behavior alone is responsible for excessive weight gain. Research into the effectiveness of Phentermine diet pills shows an average weight loss of 2-8 kg more than placebo for the same duration of treatment.

It is important to remember that Phentermine diet pill is only approved for short-term use, and it doesn’t seem to work for everyone.

Phentermine diet pills and its brand names are widely available on internet pharmacies. One can buy Phentermine from any of these sites and one might even get cheap Phentermine as compared to the drug store. Most of the Phentermine online are produced of cheap, relatively familiar ingredients. And one can get cheap Phentermine on these sites. Cheap Phentermine diet pill pharmacies are in a plenty. One must be extremely careful while buying these prescription drugs online.

Most of these prescription diet pills can only be prescribed to severely obese patients with a very high BMI as the medications also have serious side effects that make them unsuitable for many. A medical intervention in obesity starts with diet therapy for four weeks along with an appropriate exercise regime. If this fails to achieve an average weight loss of 0.5kg/week (approximately 1 pound/week) then drug therapy may be recommended. However, underlying hormonal or metabolic diseases should be ruled out prior to initiation of drug therapy.

If you are one of those unlucky people that can’t eat anything you want without putting on weight. You probably are looking for ways to take off a few pounds. Many people are trying to take off weight, but to take off weight first we need to know how we gained the weight. Below you will find 3 reasons why we put on weight.

1.DIET

That’s right diet, are you surprised? Let me explain exactly what you are doing to your body when you are on a diet. Don’t try and lose weight, what you want to lose is fat, the first 5 or 10 pounds you lose could be nothing more than water. What may be worst than that is you could be losing muscle instead of fat. Your body tries to store fat, because your body is programmed that way, if you are taking in less food your body is programmed to store what little food you are taking in and hold on to the fat you have because your body senses a danger to you. Your metabolism is also slowed down so you don’t burn as may calories as you normally would. Research has been done that suggest it is impossible to lose more than 2 pounds of fat in a week, so if you are losing more than 2 pounds a week all of that is not fat.

2. PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

Experts have estimated there could be around 50 prescription drugs can cause you to gain weight. In some cases the drug itself doesn’t cause the weight gain, but in the case of an antidepressant drug, a person may start feeling so much better they begin to eat more and start to gain weight. I don’t recommend you stop taking a drug if you suspect it is causing weight gain, but you can ask your physician if the drug you are taking will cause weight gain. In most cases your physician can offer you another drug that will work just as well, but not cause the weight gain. Never stop taking any drug without talking to your physician. Here are a few prescription drugs that could possibly cause weight gain. Steroids such as prednisone, antidepressants Paxil and Zoloft, anti seizure medication Depakote, diabetes drugs like Diabeta and Diabinese, high blood pressure drugs Cardura and Inderal, Heartburn drugs like Nexium and Prevacid. There are cases where one drug causes one person to gain weight and another person may lose a few pounds using the same drug so always talk to your physician instead of deciding what you think a drug is doing. Even though many people believe the drugs I have listed here do cause weight gain, we all have different bodies and one persons body can react entirely different to a drug than the reaction another person may have.

3. STRESS

There are studies that attribute weight gain to stress, I don’t disagree with the studies, because I think I eat more when I feel stressed, but at the same time, I believe there are some people that get so stressed out they don’t feel like eating or doing anything else for that matter. One of the reasons stress causes weight gain is it may be hard to get to sleep if you are stressful. If you haven’t had enough sleep then you are going to be tired. The first thing you think of doing is increasing your energy level. To increase your energy level you begin to eat, and many times the food you chose to eat will contain a lot of sugar, because you know that will give you a quick injection of energy. I know when I am stressed out I don’t feel like doing any exercise, but when you feel stressed one of the best things you can do is exercise, it will not only help you lose weight, it will also help you to feel less stressful. It’s kind of hard to eat while you are exercising also.

I said I would give you three reasons we gain weight, I won’t go over these, but here are a few other things that contribute to weight gain. Boredom, Medical Problems, Holidays, Quitting A Habit Such As Smoking (I added 20 pounds when I did it.) and Genetics. I hope you enjoyed this article, and it will be of some help to you.

Good Luck!

When buying diet pills, there are a couple of different ways to go about it. Some pills are only available by prescription, while others can be purchased over the counter (OTC). There are several different types of weight loss supplements, which will be discussed in the following few paragraphs.

Some of the more popular prescription drugs are: Bontril, an appetite suppressant; Xenical, a pill which helps the body absorb fat; Meridia, a supplement that encourages your body to shed pounds, and Phentermine which is easily the most popular appetite suppressant in the United States today. Whereas prescription drugs are available only from a licensed physician, over the counter supplements can be purchased by anyone and contain such ingredients as amino acids, vitamins, minerals, botanicals, herbs, etc. They typically come in capsules, powder, and pill form but are not a substitute for proper diet and exercise. When combined with a healthy well balanced diet and exercise, these pills can be effective in helping you lose weight.

When purchasing any weight loss supplement, it is important to speak with your doctor beforehand. When buying an OTC supplement, it is especially important that you check the ingredients, and read the labels carefully. Some serious side effects can occur when using drugs with Ephedra in them, such as arrhythmia, heart valve lesions, and high blood pressure. Fortunately, Ephedra is no longer widely available. Even the most popular weight loss supplements can cause problems, with or without Ephedra present! High doses of caffeine (which many weight loss products have) have been known to cause problems with the heart, and still other drugs are under the suspicions of the FDA. The bottom line when taking any supplement designed to expedite weight loss is to check the ingredients list carefully, make sure it will not react with any other medications you are taking, and speak with your doctor before going on any weight loss plan.

It should be noted that even weight loss drugs prescribed by a physician carry risks. If a doctor has prescribed a supplement for you, generally they feel that the benefits outweigh the risks but that does not mean it is safe. You must always follow instructions exactly as prescribed, and stop taking them immediately if you notice any unusual symptoms. Even prescription drugs must accompany a healthy diet and exercise to work. Contrary to what diet pill manufactures want you to believe, no one pill is going to make you lose weight. It takes time and effort, and only a willingness to invest in both will ensure success.

If you are serious about losing weight and would like to purchase a weight loss supplement to aid you in your goal, make sure to incorporate a well balanced diet and exercise into your plans. Buying diet pills can be beneficial to your weight loss plans, but only if you are smart about your lifestyle choices.
